Cloudtail's Family... With Real Genetics

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

So now we've finished Firestar's family, it's time to move on to his nephew's family. This time we will be doing Cloudtail's immediate family, his parents, siblings, mate and kits. This is gonna be a long one because Brightheart comes from a very well established ThunderClan family which goes back at least 3 generations.

Cloudtail's Side

Princess

ree

So Princess is at the "top" of Cloudtail's family tree (she's not actually but we've already done Jake and Nutmeg in Firestar's post.) She wouldn't look so different except for having a few ginger patches from her father Jake and a bit more white on her from her mother Nutmeg. Her genes are Ll, XOXo, bbl, DD, AA, McMc, Wsw.

Oliver

ree

Oliver is shown as Cloudtail's father on the Warriors family tree, but he is never referenced in the books. However, for the sake of genetics, we're gonna say that he is indeed Cloudtail's father.

His genes would be ll, XoY, BB, dd, aa, McMc, WdWd.

Cloudtail

ree

Now, Cloudtail. I tried to make Oliver's genes that are masked by his white-spotting make a light grey cat so he wouldn't look too different. However that isn't an issue because he would have the white-spotting gene all the time. Under his white spotting however he is masking a red tabby and that in turn is masking the black gene. He would be a short-furred cat most of the time though, because long fur is recessive. Here are his genes: Ll, XOY, Bb, Dd, Aa, McMc, WdWs.

Brightheart's Side

Robinwing

ree

I'm going to go up Brightheart's mother's side of the family first, and trace back to the first she-cat in her family, Robinwing. So Robinwing will keep her canon design of a brown and ginger she-cat. I've had to make her a tortie to give her the ginger chest splash. Her genes are LL, XOXo, bb, DD, aa, McMc, ww.

Fuzzypelt

ree

Fuzzypelt would also keep his iconic look of a wild-furred black tom, however for the sake of this drawing I had to use a very dark grey or he would have looked like a black smudge. His genes are ll, XoY, BB, DD, aa, McMc, ww.

Frostfur

ree

Frostfur is Fuzzypelt and Robinwing's daughter, and Brightheart's mother. I will do all of Brightheart's siblings in a separate post, probably featuring Brackenfur. She would look like the exact opposite of what the Erins imagined her to be: a black she-cat instead of white. Looks like we'll need to rename her to Shadowfur or something like that! Her black gene would come from her father and her short fur from her mother. Her genes would be Ll, XoXo, Bb, DD, aa, McMc, ww.

Harepounce

ree

Now onto Lionheart's side of the family. Harepounce is Brightheart's paternal grandmother and keeps her canon design of a light brown she-cat. Any cat who is specified as light brown in the wiki description will have the dilution gene, and the same for light ginger. Therefore her genes are LL, XoXo, bb, dd, aa, McMc, ww.

Stagleap

ree

Stagleap was Harepounce's mate and also has the dilution gene, which means that this could make for some very interestingly patterned kits. He keeps his canon design of a light grey tabby tom and his genes are LL, XoY, BB, dd, AA, McMc, ww.

Speckletail

ree

Speckletail would look very different from her canon design of a golden she-cat, in fact she would look almost exactly like her father, however I took a bit of artistic liberty and made her stripes a bit darker to differentiate the two cats. Her genes would be LL, XoXo, Bb, dd, Aa, McMc, ww.

Smallear

ree

Speckletail's mate Smallear has no canonical parents so he keeps his canon design of a grey tom, which makes it very likely that Lionheart will be grey. His genes are LL, XoY, BB, dd, aa, McMc, ww.

Lionheart

ree

Now onto Lionheart. He would look very different if genetics had taken its course, appearing as a grey tom, much like his father because although the tabby gene is dominant, Speckletail had recessive solid, which combined with Smallear's two solid genes could make a solid grey cat. His genes would be LL, XoY, BB, dd, aa, McMc, ww.

Brightheart

ree

And now Brightheart, Cloudtail's mate. She would look very different from the ginger and white cat she was supposed to be. Because the dilution gene is recessive, she would be as black as her mother Frostfur. This will make for some very interesting BrightCloud kits. Her genes would be Ll, XoXo, BB, Dd, aa, McMc, ww.

Whitewing

ree

Now time to see what those interesting genes will combine to create! Whitewing would stay as a long-furred dominant white she-cat, but she would be masking the black torbie patterning. The white comes from her father Cloudtail. Interestingly her torbie patterning and recessive chocolate colouring come from her grandma Princess, and were also masked by Cloudtail. Her masked black obviously comes from her mother, and her long fur is from both her parents having recessive long fur genes. Her genes are ll, XOXo, Bb, Dd, Aa, McMc, Wdw.

Snowbush

ree

However Snowbush would look very different from his canonical white, appearing as a long-furred light grey cat with low white spotting. The white spotting is from his grandmother Princess, the light grey from his grandfather Oliver and the long fur comes from the recessive long fur genes that both his parents have. His genes are ll, XoY, BB, dd, Aa, McMc, Wsw.

Ambermoon

ree

Ambermoon would switch from being a red tabby to a short-furred black tortie and white cat, due to her mother's black gene and her father's masked red gene and recessive low white spotting. Her genes would be Ll, XOXo, Bb, DD, aa, McMc, Wsw.

Dewnose

ree

Dewnose would end up as a black and white cat, with the black coming from his mother and the white from his father. His genes would be Ll, XoY, BB, DD, aa, McMc, Wsw.

So that's Cloudtail's family! Let me know on the forum if I got anything wrong, and what you would rename some of these cats to now that you've seen their genetically accurate coats.
